LOCATION

Castel Badia sits above San Lorenzo di Sebato in South Tyrol’s Puster Valley, surrounded by forests, villages and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites. Nearby Brunico brings historic streets, cafés and boutiques within easy reach, while Plan de Corones opens up the mountains for hiking and cycling during the warmer months and skiing throughout winter.

Autumn is an especially beautiful time to arrive. Forests across the Puster Valley turn shades of amber, red and gold, the light softens across the mountains and seasonal traditions return to the surrounding villages. As temperatures fall, the region gradually transitions towards winter, giving Castel Badia a completely different character with each season.

THE ROOMS

No two rooms at Castel Badia are exactly alike. Across just 28 rooms, the castle’s original architecture dictates the shape and character of each space, while contemporary furnishings, warm textiles and local South Tyrolean wood and stone bring the interiors into the present. Views shift between the mountains, valley and historic castle grounds.

For something particularly special, Meravigliosa occupies an ancient castle tower across two levels. The 95-square-metre suite pairs preserved architectural details with a bedroom, generous bathroom and private upper-level lounge, alongside panoramic views towards the Dolomites. For families or groups wanting greater independence, the private three-level chalet offers a more residential alternative.

WELLNESS

Hidden within the rock beneath the castle, the spa is one of Castel Badia’s most atmospheric spaces. Romanesque vaults and ancient stonework create the backdrop for a wellness philosophy shaped by the surrounding mountains, with treatments drawing inspiration from medicinal plants and botanical preparations traditionally found within the region.

Facilities include heated indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, a steam bath, hammam, four private treatment suites and panoramic relaxation areas overlooking the Puster Valley. The connection between wellness and the castle’s history continues outside in the Apothekergarten, one of its 17 gardens, where medicinal herbs recall the botanical traditions that have existed here for centuries.

DINING

Food at Castel Badia is closely tied to South Tyrol and the changing seasons. Set across a collection of historic wood-panelled rooms, Stube Badia takes guests from breakfast through to lunch and dinner, with menus built around regional produce and Alpine traditions. Mountain cheeses, seasonal vegetables, broths and familiar local recipes sit alongside more contemporary interpretations of the region.

The Bar brings a similar sense of place to its drinks, pairing classic cocktails with creations inspired by mountain herbs and local spirits. More intimate still is the castle’s Chef’s Table experience. Set around the warmth of an open hearth, it explores Alpine culinary roots through ancestral broths, wild ingredients, slow fermentations and contemporary techniques – making it a particularly romantic choice for an evening at the castle.

Food also becomes an experience in its own right. Guests can step into the kitchens for an Alpine cooking class exploring dishes such as canederli, spätzle, goulash and traditional pastries, while the mixology masterclass moves from Negronis and Dry Martinis to signature creations made with Alpine herbs, fresh fruit and botanicals.
