The TOP 4 Destinations to visit in September

September is one of the best months for travelling, particularly for those who prefer warm weather without the busiest weeks of summer. Across the Mediterranean, the sea remains warm, seasonal restaurants are still open and beach destinations begin to feel more relaxed. In the Southern Hemisphere, the arrival of spring brings longer days, blooming landscapes and excellent conditions for exploring outdoors.

The best destinations to visit in September offer more than favourable weather. Some combine culture, coastline and nearby wine regions, while others retain a lively late-summer atmosphere with fewer crowds than in August. Another stands out for its dramatic beaches, historic centre and easy access to a wider coastal region.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

September marks the beginning of spring in Cape Town, bringing milder temperatures, seasonal wildflowers and longer days for exploring the city. Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the beaches along the Atlantic Seaboard remain central to most itineraries, while the Cape Winelands can be reached in under an hour. The month also falls within whale-watching season along the Western Cape, making it possible to combine the city with a coastal trip to Hermanus.

For a quieter perspective, visit the historic wine estates of Constantia or drive north towards the West Coast, where spring flowers begin covering the surrounding landscapes. Kalk Bay is another worthwhile addition, with independent shops, seafood restaurants and a working harbour overlooking False Bay. IBIZA, SPAIN

Ibiza remains firmly in summer mode throughout September, with warm Mediterranean waters, active beach clubs and a full restaurant and nightlife calendar. The month also marks the beginning of closing-party season, as the island’s major clubs and venues build towards their final events of the year. The atmosphere is generally more manageable than in August, making it easier to explore the beaches, villages and coastal restaurants beyond the busier nightlife areas.

Spend a morning exploring the fortified streets of Dalt Vila before heading north towards quieter coves and villages such as Sant Joan and Santa Gertrudis. September is also well suited to a boat day, whether cruising along Ibiza’s western coastline or crossing to neighbouring Formentera. Our Inside List: Ibiza brings together the island’s standout luxury hotels, from beachfront favourites to countryside retreats.

BODRUM, TÜRKİYE

Bodrum is one of the strongest late-season destinations on the Turkish Aegean, combining beaches, waterfront restaurants, nightlife and luxury hotels. September remains warm and dry, but the peninsula begins to feel calmer once the busiest August period has passed. Bodrum Castle, the marina and the whitewashed streets of the old town provide a cultural contrast to days spent beside the sea.

Each area of the peninsula has a distinct character, from the stylish hotels and restaurants of Türkbükü to the slower pace of Gümüşlük. A private gulet or hotel boat is one of the best ways to explore the surrounding bays, with swimming stops in clear, sheltered water. LAGOS, PORTUGAL

Lagos combines the Algarve’s dramatic coastline with a historic centre, accessible beaches and a strong choice of restaurants and hotels. September remains warm and sunny, while the city becomes less crowded after the peak summer season. Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade are among its best-known coastal landmarks, all within easy reach of the centre.

Visit Ponta da Piedade early in the morning by kayak or small boat, then spend the afternoon at the wider and less enclosed Porto de Mós beach. Lagos also works well as a base for exploring Sagres, Vila do Bispo and the quieter western side of the Algarve.
